Upon talking to my personal football guru about the NFL Draft, Bill Kellar, Director of Football Marketing for Nike and former KC Chief, Stanford Cardinal and pupil of Bill Walsh, I asked him what he thought of all the hybrid hype going on this pre-season. Given the abundance of LB's and DE's in the first round, I am curious if the new interest in the hybrid player is just a matter of buzz words, or the advent of game changing technique? I thought his answer was very well put and thought I would share. As Mike Myers would say as Linda Richman.. "Hybrids significant, or just hype, discuss amongst yourself, I am too verklempt".
From my favorite scholar of the game : "The hybrid hype is really much ado about nothing in my opinion. The NFL has turned into a league predicated on situations based on down and distance. They shuffle bodies in and out based on 1st and 10, 2nd and 20, 2nd and 3, 3rd and 15, 3rd and 1, etc. I still think if you can run, you can play. The x factor is speed. I want guys that can run fast. Whether they are down in a stance or standing up, they have to be able to move (a little strength doesn’t hurt either). Whatever you want to call these guys really doesn’t matter. It is still my 11 players trying to stop your 11 players".
