A Three-Way Tie

Posted by:Charles Ward on:(11-25-2008)

OK, we’re all going to take a deep breath and focus. There seems to bee some mass hysteria running around regarding the Big 12 South title race.

So, to clarify, there is a three-way tie at the top of the standings. Oklahoma, Texas and Texas Tech are all 10-1 overall and 6-1 in the conference.

Now, I know a couple of the few reading this will say to themselves, “Well, duh!” Good for you. There are far too many that look at what happened on the second Saturday in October as the be-all, end-all of the Big 12 race, while conveniently ignoring the fact that Texas Tech beat Texas, and Oklahoma destroyed that same Tech team Saturday.

The games against Texas Tech must be given significant weight. Let’s not forget, if OU loses Saturday at Oklahoma State (very possible) and Tech and the ‘Horns hold serve against weak opponents, the Red Raiders, not Texas, will go to the Big 12 title game, as the winner of the head-to-head game with Texas. Also, it’s not without precedent for the loser of the OU/Texas game to win the Big 12 South (Texas in 2001, OU in ’06). The Big 12 South championship has often come down to a tiebreaker, albeit not the BCS standings one, so it's not unfair or outrageous for any of the three teams to head to Kansas City.

All of this is not to say the Red River Rivalry is/was meaningless. All three teams are 1-1 against each other, and Texas picked up their win on a neutral field, while the Sooners and Red Raiders each won on their home field (OU lost on a neutral field, to boot, while the others took their losses on the road).

The way to look at it is this: Deciding the Big 12 South champion is picking a name out of a hat. Nothing more, or less.
